Welcome to your beautiful rice paddy oasis for 3 days, located just a 1-hour drive from the airport. Keramas Surf Camp (not surf retreat) offers a taste of a bygone surfing era where simple surf accommodations paired with simple amenities are boho luxury. Air-conditioned KING size bedrooms are clean simple surf huts with their own individual outdoor private shower but no running hot water, but you're in Bali so it's always hot! This is not just cheap hotels; this is a way of life in the cutest bungalows with the most comfortable bed I've ever slept in (especially after an in-room massage from Ani after a surf). The famous world class wave is just a few minutes' walk away on the sparkling volcanic black sand. Look out on the horizon and you might just see Lombok. You can choose whether you want to have your breaky with rice paddy views or beach front views. There is a small little convenience shop at our accommodation for top ups of snacks and water. We will be able to access Hotel Kommune pool's if we buy a drink as well with views of the famous surf break.
A hidden paradise for sunrise, nature lovers and for frothing surfers only about 2.5hrs from Kuta. Just these last meters to the Jasri Dalem Surf Retreat, between the rice fields, Mount Agung to the left and the sea to the right, is a feeling of relief and immediately makes you relax when you will finally arrive. The surf camp was founded in 2006 by Australian Paul Hughes to create a place that would help the poor and disadvantaged of the community and provide a safe haven for the local kids. Some rooms may have aircon and some won't, some may be twin share, some may only have a queen bed, some may be bamboo huts or some may be actual rooms. These are beautiful rustic basic bamboo bungalows with mosquito nets but well worth being surrounded by nature and hearing the waves as you doze off to sleep. We will be able to access Jasri Ombak's pool to relax.
In this surf retreat its classic modern Balinese style, Palm Beach Hotel offers a tropical getaway in Tuban, less than a minute walk from Kuta Beach and 10-minute walk from Discovery Shopping Mall. Palm Beach may be cheap hotels but the features and location outweigh any 5-star resort in my eyes a beautiful outdoor swimming pool to enjoy after a big day surfing surrounded by lush gardens and tropical flowers. Situated within a 10-minute drive from the airport to make starting and finishing this epic surf trip more convenient with a little bit more comfort (twin beds will be available here). All rooms will have air-con and are quite comfortable with a delicious buffet breakfast to fuel us for the day. We will be able to go shopping for souvenirs here and have great sunset photos, as well as stock up on snacks and water for the rest of the surf camp.
Indonesian breakfast offers its fair share of exotic food options with a diverse variety of tropical fruit. If you have never experienced breakfast in Bali before, it’s time to explore the magical flavors and delicious food the country has to offer, and what better place to try than on a organised surf retreat. Locals usually have heavy meals consisting of boiled, steamed, or fried rice – with abundant side dishes like meat, veggies, and lentils. This is because people have historically been involved in laborious work that requires plenty of energy. Here, you can eat anything at any time of the day – even breakfast! Some of my favorite breaky items at the surf camp I have had are the nourishing smoothie bowls and yummy banana pancakes (if you have a sweet tooth like me).
Nasi goreng is one of the delicious Indonesian dishes influenced by Chinese culture. The Chinese used to fry the leftover rice instead of wasting it. Indonesian people adopted this culture and created their own version of fried rice. Although the dish is considered the national dish of Indonesia, it’s also quite famous in Singapore and Malaysia. Nasi goreng is often served with a fried egg on top of the rice and spices. It offers an earthly and smoky flavor of added caramelized soy sauce and shrimp paste. It’s already spicier than the original Chinese fried rice, but you can add even more chili to turn on the heat which locals love or ask for no chilli at all. Definitely try this for one of the included dinners on the surf camp/ surf retreat.
Indonesians have unconditional love for rice and it’s the most common staple food across the islands. Gado-gado is a salad made of veggies, hard-boiled eggs, tempeh, tofu, potato, and mouth-watering peanut sauce which is to die for. Another favorite surf camp dish of mine is chicken satay with rice. The meat, diced into small bits, is seasoned or marinated before placing on the grill. Satay will be served with peanut or soy sauce and oftentimes accompanied by the rice cake called ketupat (wrapped in the palm leaf) or rice. There is an opportunity to try the local palm wine which we can get fresh up in Jasri surf retreat (as that is where it is made and is quite delicious for an alcoholic beverage if you don't like Bintang).
Keramas is one of the most high-performance waves in the world. This part of Bali is a little quieter than Kuta and there is more space out here which has a more rural feel. Locals believe in the healing properties of the coarse black sparkling sand, making it a unique spot to bury yourself and relax, why not try burying yourself in the sand at the surf camp and relax. This black sand beach stretches for over 10 kilometers and offers breathtaking views, sparkling volcanic sand, and a glimpse of local farmers herding ducks like flocks of sheep. Be aware of outgoing tides, and the shallow reef (I use reef booties). Be sure to bring your manners here as it can get crowded with hot locals and tourists alike, if it is out of your ability perhaps try some of the less crowded options in the area. We will be surfing a break on our surf retreat which is lesser known (only a 10min drive away from Keramas) called Cucukan (conditions dependent). This surf spot is not very popular and usually is uncrowded. It needs a large swell to work properly, and the best conditions are SSW swell, W wind and mid to high tide. The above picture is me on a small day at Keramas.
Jasri beach at the surf retreat is one of the remaining few untouched beaches on the island and where you come to find the ‘real’ Bali. The beach has black sand with gravel, but despite the fact that the sand is black, it has the same beauty as a white sandy beach! Jasri is most suited for intermediate and pro’s but on smaller days the beginners will be able to have a crack. Smooth rocky bottom (I wear my reef booties at this surf camp), right-handed, rides of 100 meters, medium power, can barrel with nice walls for carving. Uncrowded on most days. View of Mt Agung, set in a beautiful palm tree-lined small bay. The most magical thing on a clear day is admiring the majestic Mt Agung (active volcano) from the line up.
Kuta reef is a world-class left hand reef break and one of my favorites. Get there by taking one of the local boats found at the front of Bintang Bali Hotel (5 star hotel) and is only 5min walk from Palm Beach (one of the hidden gems of the category of cheap hotels). On smaller days on our surf camp, it can be a friendly wave peeling for 100m allowing progressing beginners or intermediates an option to surf the reef. On bigger days the wave can offer some world-class barrels and performance walls. Kuta reef is best surfed mid-high tide, as the low tide can get very shallow on the coral reef and reef booties are optional here. There are so many options here on our surf retreat depending on crowds, wave size, wind as there is Airport Lefts, Kuta Middle, Kuta Centres and Kuta Reef all within a short distance from each other,
Our talented surf retreat coach, Sasha, will help you become a better surfer by analyzing how you surf including wave position, body movements and how you link your turns together among many other factors. Keramas Aero Park offers one of the most unique dining experiences in Bali. Inside the plane is complete with dining tables and leather seats in makeshift interiors and views toward to the islands. Inside, you can enjoy local and international dishes served by its flight attendants. You get to choose between dining in the plane or the garden. Seeing as the weather in Bali’s so hot one could probably fry an egg on the pavement,so we opted to dine inside the plane, in the comfort of air-conditioning. I imagine that at sunset, the garden area would become lively too, since the open space gives you an amazing view of the sunset over the fields. A Indonesian meal will be provided by on our surf retreat for dinner.
Virgin beach is one of the best white sand beaches with crystal clear waters in Bali with not many cheap hotels surrounding it which is why we will visit here when we are in Jasri surf retreat. Tucked away in a gorgeous bay surrounded by green cliffs and waving palm trees, Virgin beach is pure treasure. It definitely has all the ingredients for a relaxing day on the beach. With plenty of warungs, sun beds, beach massages and snorkeling activities, you can start dreaming about your relaxing day right now!
Ready to witness the beauty of the Kecak dance at Discovery Mall Bali on your surf retreat? You can enjoy the Kecak performance for FREE while taking in the stunning sunset views of Kuta beach! This iconic performance showcases the Ramayana story with dynamic movements and the unique 'cak' chants from the dancers. Don’t miss this amazing cultural experience! This event will depend on weather during our surf camp but is one of the most mesmerizing shows I have seen and on every night at 6pm.
